It’s financial madness to try Rita again

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 1:15 a.m. CST

Over the past couple of weeks, Dixon City Council members have demanded their day in court so they can have a shot at Rita.

Now they are leading the charge up the hill to the county courthouse demanding justice by having the county taxpayers pay for a trial to put a person in prison who is already in prison.

Despite the Lee County state’s attorney’s best effort to explain to the council that any further proceedings would be a waste of taxpayers’ money, the council wants to move full steam ahead.

She has reminded them that the federal judge stated that he was handing down a stiff sentence in an effort to cover both the federal and state charges. Any sentence handed down by the state court would run concurrent with the federal sentence.

In Illinois, you get a day for a day, so even on the off chance she receives a 30-year sentence in the state court, she would serve only 15 years, which is less than her current sentence.

So I say, Stop the madness.

Hasn’t enough taxpayers’ money been taken by Rita? The only one being punished now are the taxpayers of Lee County for the cost of another trial.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
