Iowa fends off Purdue; Penn State shocks No. 4 Michigan

Aaron White had 18 points and nine rebounds, and Iowa beat Purdue 58-48 in Iowa City on Wednesday for its fourth win in five games.

Devyn Marble also had 18 for the Hawkeyes (18-10, 7-8 Big Ten), who put an ugly loss at Nebraska behind them ahead of this weekend’s trip to top-ranked Indiana.

Iowa never trailed in avenging an overtime defeat at Purdue late last month. The Boilermakers (13-15, 6-9) got as close as 49-43, but poor shooting sent them to their sixth loss in eight games.

Penn State 84, No. 4 Michigan 78: Jermaine Marshall scored 25 points and hit a key layup with 1:06 left to help Penn State roar back from a 15-point deficit and upset the Wolverines in State College, Pa. 

Penn State (9-18, 1-14) had lost 18 straight regular-season Big Ten games dating to last season. The team’s previous conference win came on Feb. 16, 2012, a 69-64 victory over Iowa.

Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19 points for the Wolverines (23-5, 10-5).

Eastern Michigan 53, Northern Illinois 41: Glenn Bryant and Derek Thompson scored 14 points apiece in DeKalb, and Eastern Michigan’s defense stifled Northern Illinois. 

Mike Davis led Northern Illinois (5-21, 3-10 MAC) with nine points.

Southern Illinois 63, Northern Iowa 57: Desmar Jackson scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, as the Salukis (13-16, 5-12 Missouri Valley) won in Carbondale.

Marc Sonnen scored 18 points for the Panthers (17-13, 10-7).

Illinois State 86, Missouri State 50: Tyler Brown scored 25 points, and Jackie Carmichael added 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead Illinois State in Normal.

Johnny Hill added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Redbirds (17-13, 8-9 Missouri Valley).
