STERLING – Charles F. Berry, 86, of Sterling, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at his home.

Born May 20, 1926, in Sterling, he was the son of Frank Markus and Grace (Kearns) Berry. On Nov. 6, 1964, he was united in marriage to Donna J. Kline in Sterling.

He worked at National Manufacturing for 10 years, until his retirement in 1989. Before National, he had worked for Art Pepper Conoco as a mechanic, and at Haden Moore Machine Shop. He was a veteran of World War II, and had served as a combat engineer in the U.S. Army 247th Combat Engineering Battalion. He was a member of Sterling American Legion Post 296, and enjoyed reading, especially to his grandchildren. He also enjoyed photography, oil painting, and spending time on the computer. He and his dog, Sadie, were a familiar sight on their way to and from the park.

Surviving are his wife, Donna of Sterling; his daughters, Cathyann Berry of Sun City, Ariz., Margie Berry of Clarion, Iowa, and Lori Hartle of Sterling; his sons, Steven (Becky) Berry of Wilton, Iowa, and Craig Lewis of Mount Morris; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.  

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a granddaughter, and a sister.

Cremation rites have been accorded per his request. Private burial of cremains will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling. McDonald Funeral Home & Crematory in Rock Falls is handling arrangements.

A memorial has been established to Happy Tails Animal Shelter, 1408 McNeil Road, Sterling, IL 61081 or Serenity Hospice and Home, Box 462, Oregon, IL 61061.
