Olson, Barnett to be honored by IBCA

Call to the Hall

Scott Olson and Bob Barnett have won virtually everywhere they've roamed a sideline. Now they have something else in common.

The two coaches will be recognized for their efforts as members of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame class for 2013. They will be formally inducted at a banquet Saturday, April 27, at Braden Auditorium on the campus of Illinois State University.

Coaches must accumulate a minimum of 400 victories to be considered, a mark each has surpassed.

Olson has a career mark of 413-248 in 24 seasons, the last two of which were at Rock Falls. He went 35-22 in two seasons with the Rockets, including a 23-7 mark in 2010-11 highlighted by conference and regional championships. He was selected Sauk Valley Media's coach of the year that season.

"It's special," said Olson, who resides in LaSalle and teaches in Rock Falls, but is out of coaching – for now. "To have your peers recognize you for something like this, it just means a lot. I've seen a lot of my former players in the past couple of months, and it's been fun to talk to them about what we were able to accomplish together."

Olson also had successful stints at Orion from 1988-1993 (116-42), United Township from 1994-1999 (97-64), Danville from 2000-2006 (123-75) and LaSalle-Peru from 2008-2010 (41-44). Including Rock Falls, his teams won nine conference titles, nine regionals and one sectional, with Orion in 1989.

While at Danville in 2001, Olson's team snapped the 35-game winning streak of No. 1-ranked West Aurora at the Pontiac Tournament. In 2002, he coached the IBCA Class 2A South all-star team that included future NBA and Olympic player Andre Iguodala.

Barnett, an all-state player at Oregon in the late 1970s, got his coaching start at Franklin Center, then went on to post a 33-72 record at McHenry from 1990-93. He was fired from that position, but it hardly deterred him as a coach.

"One of the best things that happened to me was getting fired at McHenry," Barnett was quoted in the Northwest Herald in late January. "I didn't think so at the time. I got to clear my mind a little bit, then I went to Hinckley-Big Rock and built a program."

Barnett posted a 137-77 record at H-BR from 1994-2002, including regional titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000. His career record is 428-297 in 26 seasons.

Barnett is in his 11th season at Hampshire. The Whip-Purs are 22-5 this season, and tied for the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division title with Crystal Lake Central.
