George E. McBride

89, Loving Husband and Father

ROCKFORD – George E. McBride, 89, of Rockford, died Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, at Rockford Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

He was born Feb. 22, 1924, in Xenia, the son of Gerald and Mary (Schaffer) McBride. After graduating high school, George entered into the Army. He later married his loving wife, Rita Hahn of West Brooklyn. He worked for Bell Beverage as a driver and salesman, retiring after 23 years. He and Rita also were the owners of Elmer’s Place, Mary’s Place and ALIBI Inn. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Rockford, the COF, Moose Lodge, American Legion and the YMCA Retired Men’s Club. George was an avid sports enthusiast who faithfully cheered on his Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, and Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed gardening, yard work and traveling.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to his goddaughter, Kim (Bob) Purcell and their son, Adam; and to the doctors, nurses and staff in the intensive care unit at Rockford Memorial Hospital. 

Survivors include his wife, Rita, and son, Michael, both of Rockford; brother, Robert of Lee Center; sister-in-law, Deanna McBride of Rockford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings. 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, 3910 N. Rockton Ave., Rockford. Visitation also will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Saturday, with a time of prayer at 9:45 a.m. Saturday; and Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Rockford. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cemetery in West Brooklyn. A lunch will follow at St. Mary Catholic Church in West Brooklyn.

In lieu of flowers, please have a Mass said in his name at St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
