Goad helps Drake relay team to title

Dixon High School 2012 graduate Scott Goad was a member of Drake University’s first-place 1,600-meter relay team at the Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the University of Northern Iowa.

Drake’s time of 3:18.99 won by 12-hundredths of a second. Goad also placed 12th in the high jump (1.93 meters) and 16th in the long jump (6.36).


Lumzy qualifies for NCAA Championships

Bryce Lumzy, a 2008 Dixon graduate, helped Upper Iowa to a second-place finish at Sunday’s NCAA Super Regional Three and qualified individually for the NCAA Division-II Championships in 2 weeks.

Lumzy rebounded from a loss to eventual 157-pound champion Clint Poster of St. Cloud State. After winning a third-place bracket semifinal, he dominated UW-Parkside’s Dillon Bera – the nation’s top-ranked wrestler – 10-3 to place third and advance.


Illinois out of top 25 in latest poll

A 71-58 loss to seventh-ranked Michigan knocked Illinois from the Associated Press top-25 poll released Monday.

Indiana (24-3) remained No. 1, Michigan (23-4) moved up to No. 4, and Michigan State (No. 9, 22-6), Ohio State (No. 16, 20-7) and Wisconsin (No. 17, 19-8) rounded out the ranked Big Ten teams.

Brady, Pats agree to 3-year extension

Quarterback Tom Brady reached agreement with the New England Patriots on a 3-year extension that will keep him under contract with the team until he is 40.

The extension, which will keep him in New England through the 2017 season, is worth $27 million over the 3 years.

Te’o disappoints in dash at combine

Former Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o ran a 4.82 in the 40-yard dash Monday at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

Te’o was hoping to run in the 4.7s, but helped his stock with his sincerity and transparency in interviews, according to team officials.


Pistons’ Bynum suspended one game

Detroit guard Will Bynum was suspended for the Pistons’ game Monday against the Atlanta Hawks after he punched Tyler Hansbrough of the Indiana Pacers.

Bynum is averaging 9.4 points and 3.8 assists a game coming off the bench.


Random drug, alcohol tests for Pistorius

South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, charged with murdering his girlfriend, faces at least four random tests for drugs and alcohol in coming months to ensure he is complying with bail terms, an official said on Monday.

As well as having to check in twice a week, Pistorius was ordered to surrender his two passports, post $113,000 bail, and refrain from drinking alcohol until his case resumes on June 4.
