Russell helps ISU win in Terre Haute

Despite struggling from the floor, Rock Falls graduate Jamie Russell helped Illinois State beat Indiana State 63-54 on Sunday in Terre Haute, Ind.

Russell scored eight points on 3-for-10 shooting for the Redbirds (18-8), but added four assists and two steals. The Sycamores (16-9) had won four straight, as had the Redbirds, who will look to make it six in a row when they host Wichita State on Thursday.


Ross posts 9 and 9
in Chicago State loss

Dixon graduate Matt Ross scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for Chicago State in a 55-51 home loss Saturday to Texas-Pan American.

Ross played a team-high 36 minutes for the Cougars (8-19), and also had two assists and a steal. Brandon Provost led the Broncs (14-15) with 23 points.


White Sox beat, tie L.A. over weekend

After roughing up Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in a 9-0 victory Saturday in Glendale, Ariz., the Chicago White Sox had to settle for a 2-2 tie Sunday.

Alejandro De Aza hit a leadoff single off Kershaw in the first inning and later scored on the first of two doubles by Alex Rios.

Sunday, Adam Dunn hit a two-run home run off Peter Moylan in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Cubs win first two spring training games

After routing the Los Angeles Angels 11-2 Saturday, the Chicago Cubs held on to beat the defending World Series champion San Francisco Giants 4-3 in their HoHoKam Stadium opener Sunday.

Luis Valbuena homered Saturday, while Travis Wood and Jerome Williams, both vying for a spot in the rotation, worked two innings apiece.

Jeff Samardzija made a strong spring debut Sunday, and the Chicago Cubs scored four unearned runs in the first inning against San Francisco Giants ace Matt Cain. Cubs catcher Dioner Navarro, acquired as a free agent over the winter, hit a three-run homer in the first inning.

MRI: Stewart could miss 3 weeks

An MRI revealed Cubs third baseman Ian Stewart could miss 3 weeks with a mild to moderate strain of his left quad.

Josh Vitters, who has already been told he will begin the season at Triple-A Iowa, received the same news after having MRI taken Friday.

Stewart is trying to make the team after coming off left wrist surgery.


Pistorius’ brother faces trial, too

Oscar Pistorius’s elder brother faces trial for killing a woman in a traffic incident 5 years ago, the family said Sunday, confirming a report that dominated South African media 2 days after the “Blade Runner” athlete was bailed for murder.

Carl Pistorius is charged with culpable homicide in the death of a motorcyclist in 2008; the case is unrelated to the Valentine’s Day shooting of his younger brother’s girlfriend.
