Sterling students raise money for heart health

STERLING – Students at Washington and Franklin elementary schools competed Feb. 12-14 in a Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser for the American Heart Association.

The students at each school tried to raise the most money during their physical education classes, with the winning school receiving an extra recess. Washington School won the competition with $2,154.40 to Franklin’s 1,831.57.

The students decorated their gymnasiums’ walls with pictures, poem, songs, stories, and other items. Parents, grandparents, and relatives were invited to watch and jump rope with the students.

People who had heart conditions were asked to visit the schools and share their stories. Students with heart complications also spoke.

The top two fundraisers at Washington were Gracie Mahoney with $320 and Danielle Carroll with $259.

Top fundraisers at Franklin were Justin Null with $150 and Madelyn Roberts with $75.

Students who raised $50 or more will receive a complimentary ticket to the Quad City Mallards game on March 17. Other tickets to the game will be at a discounted group rate. More information about the game will be given out during the students’ physical education classes.
