Snow emergency parking in effect

Published: Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

STERLING – Sterling, Rock Falls, and Morrison declared snow emergencies Thursday afternoon in anticipation of the advancing snowstorm.

In Dixon, a snow emergency automatically kicks in when there’s more than 2 inches of snow on the ground.

In Sterling

Snow emergency parking rules took effect at 6 p.m. Thursday.

There is no parking on snow routes until all snow has been removed from the full width of the street, and no parking in the central business district or city parking lots from 1:30 to 5:30 a.m.

Odd and even parking restrictions are in effect on all other city streets. Residents should park on the odd-numbered side of the street on odd-numbered days and on the even side on even-numbered days. Tickets will not be issued between 6 and 8 a.m.

Parking restrictions will end block by block after the snowfall stops, and when all accumulated snow has been removed from the full width of the street, or when the city cancels the snow emergency.

Violators will be ticketed and may be towed at the owner’s expense. Call the Sterling Police Department, 815-632-6640, or the Public Works Department, 815-632-6657 with questions.

In Rock Falls

The snow emergency went into effect at 3 p.m. Thursday; it lasts until 8 a.m. Saturday. Odd-even parking is in effect, and all vehicles must be removed from designated snow routes until the route is cleared from curb to curb, or the emergency parking ban is lifted.

In the downtown, there is no parking from 2 to 5 a.m. during the emergency in the following areas:

• West Second Street from First to Fifth avenues.

• East Second Street from First Avenue to Avenue B.

• East Third Street from First Avenue to Avenue B.

• the 200 block of Second, Third, and Fourth avenues.

• First Avenue from the bridge to Dixon Avenue.

Vehicles left in these areas will be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.

In Morrison

People must not park on snow routes, and odd-even parking is in effect until further notice.

In Dixon

The snow ordinance applies between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. On even-numbered days, cars must be parked on the even-numbered side of the street, and on the odd-numbered side on odd days.

Residents who live on streets where parking is only permitted on one side of the road still must follow the ordinance. Those who have no parking options can call the police department at 815-288-4411 so arrangements can be made.

Even/odd parking rules do not apply in the central business district, where no parking is allowed on streets or in lots between 2 and 6 a.m. so they can be cleared.

Once a side of the road has been cleared for an entire block, parking can resume as normal.
