Not much info exchanged at session on consolidation

NELSON – Only a handful of Nelson voters turned out Wednesday to get answers about the proposed consolidation of their district with East Coloma School District in Rock Falls.

They asked questions about class sizes, curriculum and extracurricular activities, but they fixated on the existence of Nelson School.

The more vocal residents, some both alumni and parents of students at the school, seemed to understand the benefits of consolidation. One woman toward the end of the meeting admitted she and a friend came to whine about the school closure.

Superintendent Gregory Lutyens, who fielded most of the questions and concerns, told attendees that the school eventually will close, either because the district consolidates or dissolves.

“Will the school eventually close? Yes,” Lutyens said. “I can’t give you a date, but I can tell you we will run out of money and the school will have to close.”

The school board does not yet have plans for the building, which needs work, he said.

Residents of both districts will vote in a referendum to merge the two schools, as well as for new school board members, on April 9. A majority of voters in both districts must approve the referendum if consolidation is to take effect by next fall.
