Erie senior scores 49 in regional semi victory

Jacob Johnston put the Erie boys basketball team on his back and carried it to a 72-69, double-overtime victory over Indian Creek on Wednesday in a Class 1A Erie Regional semifinal.

Johnston poured in 49 points to lead the Cardinals into Friday’s title game against Paw Paw. He scored 15 field goals, including three 3-pointers, and converted 16 of 20 free throws. Just three other Erie players scored: Connor Saad (11 points), Jordan Chandler (7) and Owen McConnell (5).

Jaron Todd paced Indian Creek with 19 points.

1A Polo Regional

Eastland 67, AFC 41: Ty Hartman and Dalton Shaner each scored 18 points as the Cougars rolled past the Raiders in a semifinal at the Polo Regional.

Austin Hansen scored 10 points for Eastland (24-3), which converted just 12 of 28 free-throw attempts, but still steadily pulled away from the Raiders.

Matt Gendusa and Bret Gittleson led AFC (9-17) with 12 points apiece.

2A West Carroll Regional

Riverdale 61, West Carroll 47: Cole Solomon scored 16 points to lead the Rams past the Thunder at Mount Carroll.

Riverdale (15-13) will take on Newman in the title game on Friday.

Tommy Losch and Trevor Jones each scored 15 points for West Carroll (10-20).

2A Bureau Valley Regional

St. Bede 77, Bureau Valley 40: Brad Groleau hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter on his way to 21 points as the Bruins thrashed the Storm in a regional semifinal in Manlius.

Joe Pyska finished with 19 points and Damin Smith added 13 for St. Bede.

Parker Neuhalfen scored nine points for Bureau Valley (19-12), and Tommy Johnston added eight.
