Heavy snow on the way today

OK, it is, after all, February.

According to the National Weather Service, there’s a 100 percent chance it will snow today, and most of tonight, with accumulations of 4 to 5 inches likely by Friday morning. That kind of an inch count will trigger emergency parking regulations in most local cities.

Expect highs, and lows, in the upper 20s, and gusty east winds.

Friday, more snow is likely, with a high in the lower 30s and a low around 18. Saturday, expect clouds but no snow, with a high in the upper 20s and a low around 15, and Sunday, skies will be mostly sunny, with a high in the mid-30s and a low in the mid-20s.

It could be worse. The winter storm coming our way already was dumping snow in Colorado and western Kansas. National Weather Service meteorologist Jayson Gosselin said parts of Colorado, Kansas and northern Missouri could get 10 to 12 inches of snow. Dodge City, Kan., was bracing for up to 16 inches of snow. Farther south, freezing rain and sleet already were making driving treacherous.

Rock Falls is considering a ban on leaf burning. Should the city finally take that step?
Yes. Sterling and Dixon have had bans for years. It’s time for Rock Falls to impose a ban.
No. It would be too great a burden for homeowners to dispose of fallen leaves in other ways.
