Coloma hosting 2-ball competition

Coloma Park District will host the 16th annual 2-Ball competition at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Rock Falls Middle School. Teams of two will compete in 1-minute sessions, trying to hit as many shots from seven designated spots. 

The competition is for players 9 to 18 years old. There is an adult/child division, in which one adult will team up with a child younger than 15. 

Registration forms may be picked up at the Coloma Park District Office, 508 East 11 St., Rock Falls.

Cubs to change music at Wrigley

Cubs in-game programming director Jim Oboikowitch said Tuesday that the team plans to focus on former Cubs players and people from Chicago as guest conductors for the seventh-inning stretch. The team has used celebrity conductors since the death of Harry Caray in 1998. 

The pre-game taped music will also be updated from the best of 1980s rock songs.

Chicago not bidding for 2024

The U.S. Olympic Committee is sending a letter to the mayors of the 25 largest cities/metropolitan areas in the United States to gauge interest in a potential U.S. bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The last two U.S. bidders, Chicago (2016) and New York (2012), are on the list.

Sarah Hamilton, a spokeswoman for Mayor Rahm Emanuel, said Chicago is not interested.

Prosecutors: Pistorius shot through door

Oscar Pistorius put on his artificial legs and walked across his bedroom before firing four shots through a locked toilet door, killing his cowering girlfriend in cold blood, prosecutors said.

Reeva Steenkamp, a 30-year-old law graduate and model, died after being hit by three rounds from a 9-mm pistol, prosecutor Gerrie Nel said.

Registration for Marathon suspended

Bank of America Chicago Marathon officials suspended online registration for the Oct. 13 race after 4 hours of problems Tuesday.

Registration began at noon.  For the next 90 minutes, however, almost everyone trying to register was greeted with this:

“This site is currently unavailable.”
