MOUNT CARROLL – Dorothy “Jane” Chaffee, 88, formerly of Milledgeville, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at The Good Samaritan Society in Mount Carroll.

Jane was born March 20, 1924, in DeKalb, the daughter of Lloyd and Margerie (McDole) Shaffer. Jane attended Milledgeville High School and graduated with the class of 1942. She married Max Chaffee on Feb. 24, 1946. Max died on June 26, 2002.         

Jane and Max owned Chaffee’s Café in Milledgeville for many years. Jane also worked as a CNA at numerous nursing homes and Morrison Hospital. She was a member of Dutchtown Church of the Brethren in Milledgeville. Most of all, Jane loved spending time with her family and friends.

Jane is survived by one daughter, Peggy Kolb of Mount Carroll; one son, Kevin Chaffee of Oakwood Hills; one grandson, Jake Chaffee; one granddaughter, Emily Chaffee; two sisters-in law, Kathy Siperly and Lola Chaffee; and one brother-in-law, Elwin Duhm. 

She also was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Sally Siperly and Betty Duhm; one brother, Robert Shaffer; and one grandson, J.R. Strehlow.

A memorial gathering will be from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m., Saturday at Dutchtown Church of the Brethren in Milledgeville. Cremation rites have been accorded.

A memorial fund has been established in June’s memory.
