Durant, Paul lead West to All-Star win
Kevin Durant scored 30 points, MVP Chris Paul had 20 points and 15 assists, and the Western Conference beat the East 143-138 on Sunday in the NBA All-Star game in Houston.
Blake Griffin finished with 19 points, and Kobe Bryant blocked LeBron James twice in the final minutes.
Chicago Bulls representatives Luol Deng and Joakim Noah scored 10 and eight points, respectively, with Noah also grabbing 10 rebounds.
Ross helps Chicago State beat Urbana
Dixon graduate Matt Ross scored 13 points to help Chicago State win at home 82-74 over Urbana on Saturday.
Ross shot 5-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-3 from the free-throw line and added seven rebounds in 25 minutes.
Russell, Redbirds beat Evansville
Rock Falls product Jamie Russell’s 10 points helped Illinois State beat Evansville 64-46 on the road Saturday.
Russell also had seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal, while committing just one turnover in 37 minutes.
Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan all win
While No. 3 Michigan fended off Penn State, winless in the Big Ten, 79-71 in Ann Arbor on Sunday, the Hawkeyes and Badgers endured no such struggles.
In Iowa City, the Hawkeyes (17-9, 6-7) drilled Minnesota (18-8, 6-7) 72-51 behind 15 points from Aaron White and Roy Devyn Marble.
Ben Brust and Jared Berggren both scored 15 points for No. 20 Wisconsin (18-8, 9-4), which beat down No. 13 Ohio State 71-49 in Madison, Wis.
Maryland upets No. 2 Duke on Saturday
In College Park, Md., Seth Allen broke a tie by making two free throws with 2.8 seconds left, helping Maryland stun No. 2 Duke 83-81 on Saturday night.
Irish, Badgers win
at Soldier Field
Notre Dame and Wisconsin both won in the first Hockey City Classic on Sunday at Soldier Field.
The Irish beat CCHA-leading Miami (Ohio) 2-1, and the 18th-ranked Badgers outlasted No. 2 Minnesota 3-2 in the second game.
Merrick wins first Tour event in L.A.
John Merrick, a Long Beach Wilson High graduate and a Pac-10 champion at UCLA, won his first PGA Tour event by defeating Charlie Beljan on the second playoff hole in the Northern Trust Open on Sunday at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles.
Merrick, 30, had a final-round 69 to finish at 11-under par for the tournament.
