DAVENPORT, Iowa – If spring is here, then the Fejervary Learning Center doors will open, ushering in another season.
Monday is the first of many days to explore the center and its displays that appeal to children. The focus is the environment. Just take a look at the section dedicated to the 50 state trees.
A natural playground and a children’s garden add to the fun. How fun is it? The giant goose sets the mood. “Mother Goose” is a familiar site to those who once visited the former zoo.
The center is in Fejervary Park, where exotic animals used to roam. An aquatic center and three rental picnic shelters are available. The center has water slides, a sand play area, shallow water toys, and a sand volleyball court. This particular site in the park will need to be visited in the summer to get in the water.
The aquatic center, at 1900 Telegraph Road, opens May 28. The cost is $4, with the pool open every day of the week in the afternoon and evening.
Fejervary Park was the site of the home of Nicholas Fejervary, a Hungarian nobleman who came to Davenport in 1853. The land was donated to the city by his daughter. The city zoo opened there in 1909 and closed in 2008.
Other spots in Davenport can be explored, as well. Those who’ve kept their bicycle in storage all year can look forward to pedaling along the Duck Creek and Riverfront Recreational trails.
Duck Creek has roots that stretch back to the 1930s. The trail runs for 13.5 miles. It begins at Emeis Park, 4500 W. Locust St., Davenport, and ends at Devils Glen Park, 1101 Devils Glen Road in Bettendorf, Iowa.
Connected to it is the Riverfront Trail, spanning 7.6 miles. It has a loop around Credit Island. Visit www.cityofdavenportiowa.com to find a trail brochure with map.
Another park to spend some time at is Centennial Park, 315 S. Marquette St. This destination point is on the Mississippi, providing river views, a skateboard park, gazebos, and the Riverfront Trail.
All a visitor needs are a few warm days and some green grass and leaves to get out and get going in this Iowa location.
