2 state senators want Rockford legislation

ROCKFORD (AP) — Two Rockford state senators are supporting legislation that would raise hotel taxes in Winnebago County to pay for sports facility expansions.

The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/Uyu6tO) that Democratic Sen. Steve Stadelman filed the bill Friday. Republican Sen. Dave Syverson is the chief co-sponsor. The money would go to fund a $43 million expansion of sports facilities in Rockford and Loves Park. The legislation would give the county and its municipalities the power to pursue higher hotel taxes.

Previous versions of the legislation stalled in the General Assembly because of a disagreement between union leaders and the Rockford Park District.
