Capsules for 2013 individual state wrestling meet

Stephen Adamecz

Newman senior

Class 1A

138 pounds

29-9

Sectional place: 4th

Matmen rank: 13th

State experience: 2012 (0-1 at 138)

First opponent: Dalton Blankenship (39-8), Vandalia

Outlook: Adamecz and Blankenship each went 6-0 at the St. Thomas More New Year's Challenge, a good gauge of what they are capable of. After getting in just one bout in his state debut a year ago, Adamecz will be looking to make more noise this time around.

Isaac Anderson

Sterling sophomore

Class 2A

113 pounds

26-8

Sectional place: 4th

Matmen rank: 4th

State experience: 2012 (0-2 at 106)

First opponent: Dameon Adams (31-3), Cahokia

Outlook: Anderson wilted as a wide-eyed freshman at state, but returns with a medal in his sights. If he can get past a tough first-round opponent, that's a possibility.

Brian Bahrs

Newman senior

Class 1A

160 pounds

39-1

Sectional place: 1st

Matmen rank: 1st

State experience: 2010 (4-0 at 152), 2012 (4-0 at 152)

First opponent: Chris Maddox (30-10), Carlyle

Outlook: Bahrs knows how to perform on the state's biggest stage, as his two state titles will attest. No. 3 is a distinct possibility. Watch out for a possible semifinal against Layne Palm of Winnebago. Palm has given Bahrs fits in the past.

John Brink

Oregon senior

Class 1A

195 pounds

38-6

Sectional place: 3rd

Matmen rank: 12th

State experience: None

First opponent: Terry Martin (29-1), Chicago Douglass

Outlook: Brink rebounded from a preliminary-round loss at the Oregon Sectional to earn his first state berth. He'll be looking to continue on a roll.

Carlos Gutierrez

Rock Falls senior

Class 1A

113 pounds

34-6

Sectional place: 3rd

Matmen rank: 3rd

State experience: 2012 (0-1 at 113)

First opponent: Garrett Brachbill (38-4), Shelbyville

Outlook: Gutierrez is on the favorable side of the bracket, away from North Boone's Brandon Briggs, a defending state champ. The bottom half is wide open to see who gets a shot at Briggs.

Calvin Harridge

Morrison senior

Class 1A

195 pounds

36-7

Sectional place: 4th

Matmen rank: 10th

State experience: None

First opponent: Anthony Bauer (35-11), Dwight

Outlook: A toe injury limited Harridge's effectiveness at the Oregon Sectional, but he hopes to be 100 percent for state. If he is, he could get a semifinal bout against Lena-Winslow's Ty Harmston, the bracket's beast.

Zach Hartman

West Carroll senior

Class 1A

132 pounds

35-7

Sectional place: 2nd

Matmen rank: 10th

State experience: None

First opponent: Seth Newkirk (43-5), Litchfield

Outlook: Hartman has style with a pink mohawk, but he also has substance with 35 wins. He has a tough draw, as even if he gets past Newkirk, Wilmington's Andy Rodawald (44-2) is likely waiting. Rodawald was a runner-up to Newman's Maxx Hubbard at 132 last year.

Bryce Ivey

Newman senior

Class 1A

152 pounds

38-8

Sectional place: 3rd

Matmen rank: 6th

State experience: None

First opponent: Terry Neubeck (32-6), Herscher

Outlook: Ivey's prospects brightened when he won his third-place bout at the Oregon Sectional. He's on the opposite side of the bracket from Mercer County's Zach Nelson, who nobody wants to face before they have to.

Jake Kaecker

AFC senior

Class 1A

152 pounds

27-4

Sectional place: 2nd

Matmen rank: 3rd

State experience: None

First opponent: Stephon Gray (29-4), Corliss

Outlook: Kaecker is on the same side of the bracket as Ivey, and if they each start 2-0, would meet in the semifinals. Waiting will likely be Nelson.

Jacob Klein

West Carroll senior

Class 1A

182 pounds

33-11

Sectional place: 4th

Matmen rank: NR

State experience: None

First opponent: Colt Brummer (35-5), Cumberland

Outlook: Klein survived a difficult bracket at the always-loaded Oregon Sectional to earn his first state berth. It won't get any easier at state.

Kylian Lally

Dixon junior

Class 2A

138 pounds

38-7

Sectional place: 3rd

Matmen rank: 3rd

State experience: None

First opponent: Lavonte Blackful (30-10), Lincoln-Way West

Outlook: Lally has as good a chance as anybody in a bracket that appears to be wide open. Only one wrestler has fewer than five defeats, and that is 12-4 Ryan Foster of Bremen.

Curtis Lilly

Sterling senior

Class 2A

285 pounds

33-5

Sectional place: 2nd

Matmen rank: 3rd

State experience: 2012 (3-2 at 285, 5th place)

First opponent: Brandon Boyle (28-7), Johnsburg

Outlook: Lilly came with a whisker of making the finals a year ago before losing an overtime decision in the semis. A possible showdown with 350 Tanner Farmer of Highland looms in the quarterfnals.

Brandon McCullough

Erie-Prophetstown senior

Class 1A

106 pounds

35-3

Sectional place: 3rd

Matmen rank: 5th

State experience: 2012 (0-2 at 106)

First opponent: Victor Kalaher (33-10), Litchfield

Outlook: If McCullough can get past Kalaher, Cody Minnick, a Coal City sophomore who is 44-0 and ranked No. 1 by Illinois Matmen, looms in the second round.

Shawn Skinner

Rock Falls senior

Class 1A

195 pounds

35-3

Sectional place: 2nd

Matmen rank: 2nd

State experience: 2012 (1-2 at 195)

First opponent: Nick Vancurra (38-12), Wilmington

Outlook: Skinner got pinned by Lena-Winslow's Ty Harmston in the title bout at the Oregon Sectional. They are on a path for a possible rematch in the finals at state.

Brandon Sklavanitis

Oregon senior

Class 1A

170 pounds

43-1

Sectional place: 1st

Matmen rank: 3rd

State experience: 2012 (0-1 at 160)

First opponent: Kevin McNally (24-14), Grant Park

Outlook: Sklavanitis has a good draw, opposite Alleman's Sean Wetherell, who he split with in two meetings this season, and Pittsfield's Zach Abney, Illinois Matmen's No. 1 in the division. St. Joe-Ogden's Austin Upton (41-2) and Wilmington's Sean Liaromatis (45-2) loom as possible roadblocks to the finals.

Jake Snow

Newman junior

Class 1A

126 pounds

38-4

Sectional place: 2nd

Matmen rank: 2nd

State experience: 2011 (3-0 at 112)

First opponent: Dalton Snell (40-9), Auburn

Outlook: Snow won a title as a freshman, then was injured as a sophomore. His path to another crown will likely have to go through Stillman Valley's J.J. Whaley (39-2), who beat Snow 3-1 in the Oregon Sectional finals. They are in opposite brackets at state.
