PREP BASKETBALL

Two area teams receiving votes

The Newman and Eastland boys basketball teams were the Sauk Valley representatives in the latest AP Poll released Tuesday. The Comets received one vote in Class 2A. Eastland received seven votes in 1A.

There will be no more new 1A and 2A girls polls until the conclusion of the 2013 postseason. Full polls can be found on B3.

WRESTLING

Wrestling cut by Olympic Committee

Wrestling was left in a state of shock after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) made a surprise recommendation on Tuesday to drop the sport from the 2020 Games.

Contested in the first modern Olympics in 1896 and part of the ancient Games in Olympia, wrestling will now join seven other candidate sports battling for one spot in a revamped program.

It is unlikely, however, that it will get a reprieve when the IOC session in Buenos Aires votes on the recommendation in September as this would defeat the purpose of Tuesday’s vote.

FOOTBALL

Four Crimson Tide charged with robbery

Former top Alabama recruit Eddie Williams is one of four freshmen football players facing charges of second-degree robbery or fraudulent use of a credit card.

Defensive end D.J. Pettway (second-degree robbery), and linebackers Tyler Hayes (second-degree robbery) and Brent Calloway (fraudulent use of a credit card) were also arrested. All four have been suspended from the team.

NBA

Bird’s son attempted to run over girlfriend

Connor Bird, the 21-year-old son of NBA legend Larry Bird, was arrested on Sunday at Indiana University after he attempted to run over a former girlfriend with his car.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Former Penn star murdered by wife

The wife of former University of Pennsylvania basketball star Matthew White has been charged of stabbing her husband to death in bed.

White, 53, was sleeping when Maria Rey Garcia-Pellon stabbed him in the neck early Monday morning. After the stabbing, Garcia-Pellon changed her clothes and went to a friend’s home, where she said White had allegedly been watching pornography on a computer, and she killed him.

GOLF

Tiger Woods will play in three consecutive PGA Tour events, starting with next week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Arizona, as part of his build-up to the Masters, the year’s first major.
