Sign-up is on for bird-watching trips

THOMSON – There’s still time to sign up for free bird-watching trips to be held Friday and Saturday in the Upper Mississippi River Refuge.

A bald eagle viewing trip will leave at 8 a.m. Friday from Ingersoll Wetlands Learning Center, 7071 Riverview Road; participants will return by noon.

The birding trip will start at 8 a.m. Saturday at the refuge’s Lost Mound parking lot, 3159 Crim Drive, in Savanna; participants will return about 1 p.m.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
