Two Warriors to semis

Lilly, Villarreal advance past quarterfinals

Two Sterling Golden Warriors remained in the winner's bracket after the first two rounds of 2A Rochelle Sectional that took place on Friday. The other seven local grapplers will have to fight through wrestlebacks Saturday if they want to advance to next weekend's state tournament in Champaign.

Sterling's Curtis Lilly was pushed in his quarterfinal bout, after receiving a bye in the first round. Lilly beat Rock Island's Mike Estergard 3-2 in the tiebreaker round. Next up for Lilly will be a matchup with Peoria Central's Robert Walker in the semifinal.

Walker beat Glenbard South's Joe Alfonzo 5-0 in a quarterfinal bout.

Teammate Josh Villarreal beat Morton's Joe Geiger 7-0, after receiving a bye in the first round. Villarreal will face IVC's Jordan Ladd in a semifinal match Saturday. Ladd beat East Peoria's Kade McDonald 12-5 in the quarterfinal round.

Sterling's Jaden Urrutia, who had a bye through the first round, lost his 106-pound quarterfinal 11-5 to Yorkville Tyler Burlington. Urrutia will face United Township's Marques Harrison in a wrestleback on Saturday. Harrison lost by major decision 14-4 to Canton's Dillon Lee in the first round.

Like Urrutia, Dixon's Kylian Lally had a bye past the first round, but could not capitalize on it. Lally fell 9-6 to Yorkville's Brennan Sharp in the quarterfinal. He'll have to fight back for a place in the third-place bout. That road will start with Geneseo's Jarred Bruce, who lost 7-1 to Peoria Central's Elliott Smith in the first round.

Sterling's Isaac Anderson won his 113-pound  first-round bout by pinning Yorkville's Dan Cikauskas in 4:12. Anderson then fell in the quarterfinal 11-0 to Sycamore Kyle Akins. Anderson will face East Peoria's Zach Hogan in a wrestleback. Hogan lost to Belvidere's Ricardo Roman 16-0 in the first round.

Teammate John Hardey was pinned by LaSalle-Peru's Jacob Wever in the first round at 126 pounds. Hardey will face Peoria Central's Ricky Stringfellow next. Stringfellow lost in the quarterfinals 6-4 to Rock Island's Tyler DeHaven.

Sterling's Bryant Lilly fell 6-4 to Peoria Central's Keenan Chapai at 160 pounds. His teammate Will Canales lost 11-9 to Zak Gerogitsis from Glenbard South at 220 pounds.

Lilly's next match will be against Peoria Central's Isaac Empson, who lost to Yorkville's Tyler Wilkinson 2-0 in a quarterfinal.

Canales faces Martin Malone in wrestlebacks. Malone, from Sycamore, lost 3-2 to Washington's Jake Godinez in a quarterfinal.

Dixon's Trent Brinkmeier fell 6-4 to Boylan's Ryan Barelli at 132 pounds. Brinkmeier will wrestle Morris's Justin Barkley next. Barkley dropped a 9-3 decision to Rock Island's Chase Wiggins in the quarterfinals.
