Math students compute, compete

Winners will represent area at state competition March 9

DIXON – A team from Rochelle Middle School and two students from Byron Middle School will represent the area at the state MATHCOUNTS competition next month.

The state qualifiers were among more than 50 sixth- through eighth-graders from six area schools who competed in the annual MATHCOUNTS contest Saturday at Sauk Valley Community College.

Winners in the team competition were:

n First place: Rochelle Middle School

n Second place: Byron Middle School

n Third place: St. Mary School, Dixon

n Fourth place: St. Anne School, Dixon

Winners in the individual competition were:

n First place: Alex Harvey, Rochelle Middle School

n Second place: Lane Watson, Byron Middle School

n Third place: Taylor Conley, Byron Middle School

n Fourth place: Alec Tilton, Rochelle Middle School

n Fifth place: John Daniel Ackert, St. Anne School, Dixon

n Sixth place: Elizabeth Eifel, St. Mary School, Sterling

The Rock River chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers organizes the annual contest to recognize achievement in mathematics among middle-schoolers.

The competition features oral and written rounds. The problems, which span algebra, probability and statistics, focus on grade-appropriate standards of the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics.

The top team – Rochelle Middle School – and the top two individuals not on the winning team – Lane Watson and Taylor Conley, both of Byron Middle School – will represent the area at the state MATHCOUNTS competition March 9 in Lisle. Winners at the state contest will go on to compete at nationals in May.
