FEDERAL COURT

Thursday

WIRE FRAUD CASE: Rita A. Crundwell, 60, of Dixon; the former Dixon comptroller pleaded guilty in November to wire fraud in connection with her theft of nearly $54 million between 1990 and her arrest in April.

On the docket: Sentencing. Crundwell faces up to 20 years in prison.

LEE COUNTY

Friday

MURDER CASE: Brian C. Sigler, 34, of Dixon; charged with first-degree murder. Police say Sigler strangled his wife, Yolanda, 34, before trying to kill himself in their Dixon home on Jan. 13. 

On the docket: Status hearing.

WHITESIDE COUNTY

Today

MURDER CASE: Nicholas T. Sheley, 33, of Sterling; sentenced to life without parole last month for the bludgeoning death of Russell Reed, 93, of rural Sterling.

He already is serving life without parole in the death of a 65-year-old Galesburg man and is charged with six other deaths.

On the docket: Hearing on a motion to reconsider his sentence in the Reed case.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."
