Trial set in shaken-baby case

Charles George

DIXON – Charles George, the man charged with shaking his infant daughter and causing her death in 2010, will be tried May 15.

The trial is expected to last 5 days, his attorney, Lee County Public Defender Bob Thompson, said Thursday during a brief hearing.

George, 35, has a pretrial hearing March 21.

He is charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a child, aggravated domestic battery, and involuntary manslaughter.

Police say he shook 3-month-old Tamari on Sept. 17, 2010, and dropped her on the floor. She died 5 days later at a Rockford hospital.

The case stalled for more than a year after prosecutors appealed a decision by Judge Ron Jacobson to toss George’s confession to police.

Jacobson ruled that the confession was inadmissible because George made it after he “clearly and unequivocally” asserted his right to remain silent.

The appellate court reversed Jacobson’s ruling in August.
