STERLING – It will be a busy time in February and March at Sterling Public Library, 102 W. Third St.

■ The Adult Serious Readers’ Group will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 26.

The books of choice are “The Cat’s Table,” by Michael Ondaatje for February; “Barbarian Nurseries,” by Hector Tobar for March; and “A Spot of Bother,” by Mark Haddon for April. The group meets the last Tuesday of each month.

Adult programs will include a Meal and a Movie. M&M features soup, sandwich, and a beverage at noon with a movie at 12:30 p.m. Donations are accepted. “The Philadelphia Story” will be shown Feb. 26, “Local Hero” will be March 26, and “Driving Miss Daisy” will be April 30.

■ Mexican Train Dominoes, also for adults, will be played on the first Saturday of each month. The cost is $7.

The doors open at 2:30 p.m., and play starts at 3 p.m. Prizes and snacks will be provided.

Proceeds go to the Sterling Storytelling and Arts Festival. The next games are March 2 and April 6.

■ Family Literacy Fun Night at the library will be March 7. From 6 to 6:45 p.m., there will be hands-on activities, followed by a magician and puppeteer from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m.

Games, crafts, and other activities will be available.

■ The library board will meet at 5 p.m. March 11.

■ Spring Storytimes are scheduled for 10:30 to 11 a.m. Fridays for children 3 to 5. The days and themes are Wear ‘n of the Green on March 15, Fine Feathered Friends on March 22, Hop To It! on March 29, You’re Kidding! on April 5, Splish! Splash! on April 12, and Plant It Here! on April 19.

■ The library’s genealogy-local history department is working with the Illinois Veteran’s History Project to record and honor patriots, both living and dead.

Veterans or civilians, who served during wartime, or their family members are encouraged to document the memories of service. Forms can be picked up at the library.

The stories will be archived in Springfield; visit www.idaillinois.org to view the oral and written histories. Those submitting information will receive a Certificate of Appreciation.

Wise saw collapse in support

Last week, Sterling Alderwoman Amy Viering attended her last meeting as a city official. She gave the usual praise one hears at such departures. But one compliment stuck out. At the end of her speech, she turned to City Administrator Scott Shumard and said, "You're awesome."

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
