Mary Mekeel Bennett

ROCK HILL, N.C. – Mary Mekeel Bennett, 90, of Rock Hill, S.C., passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at her home.

Born in Harmon, she was the daughter of Julius and Blanche Mekeel. She served in the Army Nurse Corps as a first lieutenant during World War II. She retired from Piedmont Medical Center and York General Hospital, both in Rock Hill, after 25 years. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, St. Martha Study Group, American Legion Post 34, and the Elks Club, all in Rock Hill.

She is survived by her three sons, William Thomas Bennett of Baytown, Texas, and Clyde Mark Bennett and Richard Joseph Bennett, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Sister Carolyn Ann Bennett of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Savannah, Ga., Nancy Louise Grane of Coloma, Mich., and Patricia Ellen Winner and her husband, Stan, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Blanche Ann Rios and her husband, Edward, of Peoria; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
