Senior Tyson Powers, 17, of Amboy, is Amboy High School’s January Student of the Month. He is the son of Dean and Mandy Powers, and has a sister, Mallory, 9.

Favorite class: Math. I just enjoy doing it, and it’s pretty fun.

Top teacher: I have been fortunate enough to have many good teachers over the years in the Amboy schools.

Extracurriculars: I have been a 4-year member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams. I also belong to the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society.

After graduation: I plan to attend a 4-year college and major in education.

Paycheck: I work at Shady Oaks Country Club. I do anything from mowing greens and fairways to weed-eating creeks. I enjoy working there; it’s a good time.

Best friend: I don’t have just one best friend; there is just a big group of us that always hangs out together.

Favorite music: Country.

Favorite actor: Denzel Washington.

Favorite movie: “Remember the Titans.”

Favorite hobbies: Spending time with friends and family and playing sports.

Favorite outdoor activity: Golf.

Favorite food: Wings and pizza.

Biggest fear: Snakes. I can’t stand them.

Least favorite class: I enjoy all of my classes.

What makes your blood boil? When people don’t give their best effort.

Favorite hangout: I spend a lot of my free time hanging out in the gym. I like to be there because I’m either talking sports with friends or coaches.

What is the key to surviving high school? Getting involved in as many activities as you can and doing all your homework and turning it in. Also respecting your teachers.

Useless knowledge: Translating poetry.

I’m in the dictionary next to: Passionate. Because I always work hard to achieve goals.

Tell me something about yourself that most people don’t know: At age 17, I still can’t swim.

Dream job: A groundskeeper at a baseball stadium, preferably Busch Stadium for the Cardinals.

Trading places: Mike Krzyzewski, coach of the Duke Blue Devils. Duke is my favorite college basketball team, and he has always been a role model, and I want to become a successful coach like him some day. I would win Duke a national championship.

Good or bad? Depends on who you ask

Sometimes readers ask for more good news in the paper. They say we in the media only cover the bad. But one person's positive is another's negative.

My kind of game

I would have gladly paid to take in the game I covered Saturday morning in Morrison.
