1A Rock Falls Regional

When: Saturday; 9 a.m. start; 2 p.m. finals

Where: Tabor Gym, Rock Falls

Local teams: Amboy, AFC, Newman, Polo, Rock Falls

Other teams: Mendota, Princeton, Putnam County, St. Bede

Individual advancement: Top 3 finishers in each weight class advance to the Oregon Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Team advancement: Top team advances to the Byron Sectional on Feb. 19.

Locals to watch: 113 – Carlos Gutierrez (Rock Falls); 113 – Anthony Hahn (AFC); 126 – Jake Snow (Newman); 138 – Tibs Cervantes (Rock Falls); 152 – Jake Kaecker (AFC); 152 – Bryce Ivey (Newman); 160 – Brian Bahrs (Newman); 195 – Shawn Skinner (Rock Falls); 220 – Josiah Torres (Rock Falls)

Team outlook: It will be hard for any team in the field to compete with the depth of the Rock Falls lineup. Newman may end up with a solid point total, but leave way too many weight classes open to contend. 

1A Sherrard Regional

When: Saturday

Where: Sherrard High School

Local teams: Erie-Prophetstown, Fulton, Morrison

Other teams: Alleman, Mercer County, Orion, Riverdale, Rockridge, Sherrard

Individual advancement: Top 3 finishers in each weight class advance to the Oregon Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Team advancement: Top team advances to the Byron Sectional on Feb. 19.

Locals to watch: 106 – Brandon McCullough (E-P); 113 – Josh Bowling (E-P); 138 – Jared Cole (E-P); 170 – Seth Montgomery (E-P); 195 – Calvin Harridge (Morrison); 195 – John Butts (E-P)

Team outlook: Mercer County finished fourth in the dual state tournament last season, and return a solid amount of grapplers from that team. Erie-Prophetstown is also a deep team that will a few wrestlers to perform above theirs seeds to test the Golden Eagles. 

1A Dakota Regional

When: Saturday

Where: Dakota High School

Local teams: Oregon, West Carroll

Other teams: Byron, Dakota, Durand, Lena-Winslow, Rockford Lutheran, Stillman Valley, Winnebago

Individual advancement: Top 3 finishers in each weight class advance to the Oregon Sectional on Feb. 8-9.

Team advancement: Top team advances to the Byron Sectional on Feb. 19.

Locals to watch: 126 – Jeff Casey (W. Carroll); 132 – Zach Hartman (W. Carroll); 138 – Jake Kenney (Oregon); 145 – Morgan Hartman (W. Carroll); 152 – Cody Yenney (W. Carroll); 160 – Matt Ross (W. Wise saw collapse in support

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
