The Polo Marcos warmed up for their showdown against Aquin with a 68-51 NUIC East victory Thursday in Pecatonica that wasn’t as close as the final score.

AJ Dollmeyer led four Marcos (15-5, 8-2) in double figures with 20 points. Brian Cavanaugh scored 16 points, and Brady Bushman and Sawyer Frano added 10 apiece.

Robbie Blassingham and Jared Squires scored 10 points apiece for Pecatonica (8-12, 3-6), which had a 21-7 advantage in the fourth period.

Aquin (18-1, 9-0) beat Durand 52-44. The Marcos can get within a game in the loss column when the Bulldogs visit Polo at 7:30 Saturday night.

South Beloit 66, AFC 64: The Raiders’ rally came too late in an NUIC East tilt in South Beloit.

Troy Mairs had 24 points for AFC (7-13, 1-8), which outscored the Sobos (5-11, 5-4) 22-19 in the third and 24-18 in the fourth.

Matt Saari scored 18 points and went over the 1,000-point mark in his career for South Beloit.

Winnebago 72, Oregon 34: The Hawks managed just three points in the second quarter of a Big Northern West road game.

Matt Reinke led Winnebago (22-0, 9-0) with 15 points. Oregon (12-11, 1-8) star Caleb Mowry was held to eight points, more than 10 fewer than his average.

Dakota 52, Milledgeville 35: The Indians won every period to slowly pull away in an NUIC East game in Dakota.

Kameron DawTyne, Caleb Skoog and Doug Williams all scored seven points for Milledgeville (7-13, 3-6). Brett Benning’s 24 led Dakota (14-6, 8-2).

Scales Mound 52, West Carroll 41: With a 29-15 advantage in the middle periods, the Hornets blew open an NUIC West game in Scales Mound.

Tommy Losch scored 11 points for West Carroll (9-15, 3-5), which outscored Scales Mound (12-5, 5-3) 13-8 in the fourth. Derian Phillips led the Hornets with 22 points.

Eastland 63, River Ridge 37: Dalton Shaner scored 19 points to lead four Cougars in double figures in their latest NUIC West rout, this one in Hanover.

Eastland (20-3, 10-0) can clinch a share of the division title with a win over West Carroll next Thursday in Savanna.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
