WINDSOR, Colo. – Darrel D. Ivins, 87, of Windsor, Colo., formerly of Sterling, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, at Windsor Health Care.

Darrel was born March 3, 1925, to William and Nellie (Harmon) Ivins in Woodruff. He graduated from high school in Danvers, and served in the Army Infantry during World War II. On Dec. 2, 1944, he married his high school sweetheart, Norma Jean Reed, with whom he spent the next 68 years of his life.

Darrel worked as an engineer for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service for 35 years, designing waterways and watersheds in northern Illinois. Darrel and Norma lived in Sterling for 30 years. Subsequent to retirement, he and Norma moved to Tennessee for 8 years, then to Windsor in 1991. The family had vacationed in Colorado since the 1950s, and it always had been Darrel’s dream to live in Colorado.

He was a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Timnath Presbyterian Church in Timnath, Colo. He built four of the family homes. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, fishing, camping, and traveling. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, and after moving to Colorado, a Colorado Rockies fan as well. He had been scouted by professional baseball in high school, but World War II ended that opportunity.

Darrel is survived by his wife, Norma, and sons, Doug (Christine) and Dana Ivins, all of Windsor; grandsons, Mason Ivins of Portland, Ore., and Zachary Ivins of Las Vegas; granddaughter, Stacy Lane of Rock Falls; and three great-granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his half brother, Harry Lemons.

Private family service will be at a later date. Marks Funeral & Cremation Service in Windsor is handling arrangements.
