Weather causing slight delay in work on new housing complex in Sterling

Construction continues on a housing complex on West 11th Street, between Avenue L and Woodburn Avenue in Sterling. The Country Lane Apartments will have 24 duplexes for people with low to moderate incomes. Yost Management, which will own and operate Country Lane, hopes to have the development open in August.

STERLING – Construction is 10 percent complete for a new housing complex on the city’s west end, the company’s vice president says.

Work began the first week of January on the low- to moderate-income housing complex, known as Country Lane Apartments. It is being built on 7 acres on West 11th Street, between Avenue L and Woodburn Avenue.

The complex will have 24 duplexes with one-, two- and three-bedroom units, a community building, and laundry facilities.

Jeremy Yost, vice president of Yost Management Co., said this week that the sites have been cleared for construction on the $9.3 million project. Grading at the site is under way.

The detention area is partially dug out, Yost said, and the roadway path has been built up.

The building locations have been staked. The area has been pre-staged for construction, Yost said, and work will continue once the weather has improved.

“Due to weather, they haven’t been able to get compaction completed of all the building,” he said. “Rain, snow issues, ground being frozen. We’re at a standstill on construction.”

The project is being built by Forsyth, Ill.-based Horve Builders. Larry Moore, superintendent, said he hopes to resume construction of the building itself by the first of March.

He said sewer and water lines will be installed this month.

Yost said crews will finish all the building paths next and get the foundation set. Crews will “eventually start getting the building up where we can start putting walls up,” he said.

He said he wants to have the development open in August.

“We hope to begin moving residents in in August,” Yost said. “We’ve got high expectations, really excited to get moving into high gear. The whole city of Sterling has been great to work with.

“We’re very, very excited about it and [bringing] another wonderful facility to the city of Sterling.”

Yost Management already operates the Heritage Woods assisted living facility in Sterling.

Once the development is open, a property manager and maintenance director will be on site, Yost said.

While the complex was being approved, some Sterling residents opposed the opening of a low- to moderate-income housing building.

Yost said this week that the complex would be “a beautiful site” featuring top-quality construction.

“It’s going to be nothing but a beautiful addition,” he said. “It’s new construction; it’s going to be a great addition.”
