Time to quit National Rifle Association

Published: Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013 1:15 a.m. CDT

I just mailed in my refusal to renew my membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA). I quit.

While a half dozen people are killed each day in America (mostly by guns – 500 a year in Chicago alone), the NRA wants no change in gun regulation.

Then I remember a piece of advice attributed to former President Herbert Hoover. When you resign from a group in protest, don’t go quietly “into the night”; make a big noise, or your protest will go unnoticed.

This Reader’s Voice is my “big noise.” This is a good time to quit the NRA.

Call, write, or email your representatives in Congress and Springfield. Demand background checks at all points of sale, and small ammunition chambers and non-assault-type weapons for non-police and non-military.
