PREP BASKETBALL

Rankings hold steady for local teams

The Prophetstown girls basketball team remained the only area team ranked in the AP poll released Tuesday.

The Prophets held steady at No. 6 in Class 1A, while Oregon again missed being ranked in 2A by a few votes. Their six votes were three fewer than those of Riverdale, Clinton and Teutopolis.

The Eastland boys team got 20 votes in 1A. Tenth-ranked Mounds Meridian received 33. See the polls in their entirety on B4.

Free throw contest
is Saturday

The Coloma Township Park District is presenting a free throw contest Saturday at Rock Falls Middle School.

The event begins at 1:30 p.m., and is open to those ages 8 and older.

League investigating reported PED sales

Major League Baseball is investigating a report alleging several of its high-profile players were sold performance-enhancing drugs by a South Florida anti-aging clinic.

MLB said it a statement it was “extremely disappointed” to hear any alleged links between players and banned drugs, but was investigating the claims, published in the Miami New Times on Tuesday.

Two players named in the report, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez, have denied the allegations.

Bears sign veteran safety Nelson

The Chicago Bears signed safety Tom Nelson to a reserve/futures contract.

Nelson was released by the Philadelphia Eagles in August after suffering a high ankle sprain. The 5-foot-11, 200-pound defensive back played in 12 games as a rookie in 2009, making three starts for the Bengals. He played in eight games for the Bengals in 2010 and then appeared in the final four games of the 2011
season for the Eagles.

Rams reported hire of Ryan contradicted

Rob Ryan, fired at the end of the 2012 season after 2 years as defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, reportedly had agreed to terms of a deal with the St. Louis Rams last week. But the Rams released a statement via Twitter on Tuesday that they’re still looking.
