Girls roundup: Warriors roll past Kaneland

The Sterling girls basketball team bounced back nicely from Thursday’s loss at Ottawa, traveling to Maple Park on Saturday and returning with a 52-40 victory over Kaneland.

Kiarra Harris hit eight of her 11 free throws and led the Golden Warriors (15-12) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlyn Bauer added 12 points, six rebounds and five steals for Sterling, which led 24-12 by halftime.

Allyson O’Herron hit four 3s and scored 18 points to pace the Knights.

Erie 50, Newman 38: The Cardinals outscored the Comets 31-13 after halftime in a Three Rivers win at Erie.

Courtney Cobert led Erie (18-8, 7-5) with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Rachel Cobert added 11 points. The Cardinals shot 20 more free throws than Newman (34-14), but made just eight more (19-11).

Rachel Hageman and Aubree Schmitt paced the Comets (13-10, 8-4) with 11 points apiece.

Riverdale 55, Amboy 41: The Clippers hung tough with the 20-2 Rams for a quarter before Riverdale pulled away in Amboy.

The Rams (11-1 Three Rivers) led just 19-17 after one quarter, but went up 33-23 at the half and 50-35 through three quarters.

Riverdale got 17 points from Lauren Claus. Amboy (12-12, 5-8) was led by Kaitlyn Liebing and Brooke Lovgren, who had 12 points apiece.

Prophetstown 46, Kewanee 29: Corrie Reiley scored 12 points, and Cassie Reiley added 11 as the Prophets (23-3, 11-1 Three Rivers) routed the Boilermakers in Kewanee.

Amber Jordan paced Kewanee (11-14, 5-6) with 14 points.

AFC 49, Milledgeville 39: The Raiders outscored the Missiles in every quarter of an NUIC East clash in Ashton.

Alisyn Essex hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 points for AFC (10-12, 3-8). Courtney Swalve led Milledgeville (5-17, 2-9) with 16 points.

Forreston 55, Polo 34: Brecken Albrecht finished with eight points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals in the Marcos’ NUIC East road loss.

Aleetra Roberts added 11 points, six rebounds and two steals for Polo (7-16).

Eastland 65, West Carroll 27: All 10 Cougars played and scored in an NUIC West game in Lanark.

Hannah Hake scored 12 points for Eastland (19-7, 8-2), which led 16-7 after one quarter, 26-15 at halftime and 37-21 after three.

On pensions, Bivins and GOP far apart

Sen. Tim Bivins, R-Dixon, joined with many of his fellow Senate Republicans this week to reject a pension bill sponsored by Democratic Senate President John Cullerton of Chicago. The measure passed 40-16. Bivins had a different reason for his no vote.
