Boys roundup: Cougars pull out win in Pinckneyville

Warriors lose in Maple Park; Prophets claim Ottens Shootout victory

Skylar Paulson’s basket with 1.5 seconds remaining lifted the Eastland boys basketball team to a 43-41 victory over Goreville on Saturday at the Pinckneyville Shootout.

Paulson led the Cougars (18-3) with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and was named the game’s MVP. Dalton Shaner and Austin Hansen chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Blake Gray scored 11 points for the Blackcats, who slipped to 17-4.

Kaneland 60, Sterling 33: Zach Rehmert scored 16 points for the Golden Warriors (9-13) in a loss to the Knights in Maple Park.

Matt Limbrunner had 22 points for Kaneland, which led 38-19 by halftime.

Eric Ottens Shootout

Prophetstown 53, Stockton 46: The Prophets led 18-10 after one quarter, then held on for a win in Fulton.

Zach Inskeep scored 17 points, Ethan Howard had nine and Devin Johnson added eight for Prophetstown (12-12). Colton Broshous led the Blackhawks (11-5) with 13 points.

Clinton (Iowa) 48, Erie 37: The Cardinals were outscored 24-16 in the middle two periods in a loss in Fulton.

Connor Saad scored 16 points for Erie (14-10), which trailed 19-16 after one quarter. Brady Ernst had 17 points for the River Kings.

Preston (Iowa) 87, Fulton 42: Colton Bormann hit 8 3-pointers and poured in 34 points as the Trojans rolled past the Steamers at the Ottens Shootout.

Preston led 24-2 after one quarter, 43-8 at the half and 70-19 after three quarters. T.J. Huizenga led Fulton (5-18) with nine points.

Boys swimming

Sterling 129, IMSA 47: The Golden Warriors won nine of 12 varsity events on Senior Day at the Duis Center, led by Tanner Morse’s milestone in the 1-meter diving competition.

Morse won the diving event with 200.40 points, becoming just the second diver in Sterling history to record a score of 200 points in a six-dive competition.

Keaton Dir, Keanu Interone and Andrew Blackburn all won two individual events, and teamed with Sam Wike to take the 200 medley relay (1:45.65). Dir won the 200 freestyle (1:48.85) and 500 free (5:01.23), Interone took the 100 butterfly (55.87 seconds) and 100 breaststroke (59.23), and Blackburn won the 50 free (24.32) and 100 free (55.73).

Wike added a win in the 100 backstroke (1:03.07).


Marcos fifth at Lutheran: Polo finished with 96.5 points to take fifth place in the Rockford Lutheran Midnight Rumble on Friday.

Rockford Lutheran (208), Walther Lutheran (142.5), Fairhaven (125) and Winnebago (124.5) were the top four teams.

Leading the way for the Marcos were champions Ethan Cain (145 pounds) and Dalton Haenitsch (195). Zach Hagemann (170) and Jeff Kimpel (182) placed second.
