Wolverines shake Boilermakers

Eastern, Western, SIU-Edwardsville all earn victories

Trey Burke had 15 points and eight assists and gave No. 2 Michigan a boost on defense, helping the Wolverines shake free of Purdue in the second half for a 68-53 win Thursday night in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Tim Hardaway Jr. added 13 points for Michigan, which has a chance to move to No. 1 in the next AP poll if it can win at Illinois on Sunday. Duke, the current top-ranked team, lost Wednesday.

The Wolverines (18-1, 5-1 Big Ten) trailed by seven in the first half, but Purdue (10-9, 3-3) couldn’t keep up its torrid outside shooting. Terone Johnson scored 14 points for the Boilermakers.

W. Illinois 43, IPFW 40: Ceola Clark scored 11 points and Western Illinois, despite not scoring in the last 8 minutes of the game, held on to beat IPFW in Fort Wayne, Ind.

Remy Roberts-Burnett added 10 points for the Summit League-leading Leathernecks (16-4, 8-1 Summit). Jack Houpt’s 3-pointer with 12:49 left was Western Illinois’ last field goal, and the Leathernecks didn’t score after Don McAvoy’s free throws made it 43-31 with 8:35 to play.

Mario Hines led the Mastodons (9-13, 2-6) with 13 points.

E. Illinois 69, UT-Martin 56: Morris Woods had 15 points, and Sherman Blanford also scored 15 to lift Eastern Illinois to a win over Tennessee-Martin in Charleston.

Malcolm Herron scored 13 points, and Josh Piper added 10 points for the Panthers (5-16, 2-6 Ohio Valley), who have won two in a row following a 12-game losing streak.

SIU-Edwardsville 80, Southeast Missouri State 77: Mark Yelovich had 24 points to lead SIU-Edwardsville past Southeast Missouri State in Edwardsville.

SIU-Edwardsville (6-10, 2-4 Ohio Valley) trailed 43-39 entering the second half and was down 48-39 just a minute into the second half before going on a 20-2 run.

capped off by a Jerome Jones 3-pointer to give the Cougars a 59-50 lead with 9:25 to go. The Cougars never trailed from that point on.

Jones ended his night with 19 points including four 3-pointers and grabbed six rebounds.

Michael Messer had 13 points including a 7 for 8 performance from the free-throw line for SIU-Edwardsville and Kris Davis chipped in with 12 points.

Corey Wilford led Southeast Missouri (11-10, 3-4) with 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting, Marland Smith had 15 points and four assists and A.J. Jones had 12 points and five rebounds.
