Win record doesn’t come easy for Rockets

Tying a school record wasn't easy for the Rock Falls Rockets on Thursday. They needed two more wins with traditional 1A powers Newman and Stillman Valley standing in the way.

The Rockets did it by besting the Comets 40-37 and then knocking off the Cardinals 43-30 in Stillman Valley. The two wins give the Rockets a 22-5 record. They will not wrestle another dual this season unless they win the 1A Rock Falls regional next Saturday.

Winning two contested matches on the night for Rock Falls were Carlos Gutierrez at 120 pounds and Josiah Torres at 220 pounds. Gutierrez had a major decision of Newman's Eli Monier at 15-6, and beat Mason Tomash of Stillman Valley 11-6. Torres pinned Stillman's Jaocb Breitbach in 1:17 and Newman's Noah Leffleman in 1:36.

Newman lost to Stillman Valley 51-22. Double winners in contested matches for the Comets were Brandon Ahlgrim (132), Bryce Ivey (152) and Brian Bahrs (160). Newman win six of the eight contested matches against the Comets.

Hawks sweep Raiders, Steamers: Oregon knocked off AFC 42-21 and Fulton 45-18 in Fulton. The Steamers lost to AFC 30-27 in the other match.

Oregon received four forfeits against AFC to build a lead. Taron Heck recorded a pin at 160 pounds, and Ashton Rutherford won by decision at 145 pounds.

Oreogn won four of the five contested matches against Fulton. Dominic Marchetti (138), Jake Diehl (170) and Matt Crandall (285) each recorded pins for Oregon.

The Raiders won two of the three contested matches against Fulton. Anthony Hahn (113) and John Hilliker (132) both recorded pins for AFC. Fulton's Aaron Field defeated Riley Stephens 8-5 at 138 pounds.

Oregon 2,617, Byron 2,611: Behind Karissa Corbin's 564 series, the Hawks won the total pin count over the rival Tigers, but could only take three of seven NIBC points.

Byron took the first two games, but Oregon roared back in the third, winning 981-862 to pick up the two game points and the bonus point for overall pinfall.
