Outdoor adventures: Circle May 11 on your calendar

Published: Friday, Jan. 25, 2013 11:41 p.m. CDT

I hope this is cold enough for you. What a bitter week here in the Rock River valley.  Deer season came to an end, and the river froze up, all at the same time. Now what’s a boy to do?

Well, I went to work on organizing some kick-butt fishing stuff, starting with the Monsters tournament deal. I am glad to announce our first tourney of the year will be held May 11.

It will be a manufactured bait-only tournament, and the primary sponsor will be G & S Cheese Bait, who will guarantee 500 smackers for first place. But that’s not all. No, no, no.

J & N Dip Worms will guarantee $250 bucks for second place. But it doesn’t end there.

Niccoli’s restaurant in Prophetstown will put up $100 for third place, and host the registration meeting Friday, May 10, from 6-8 p.m. That means tacos and ice cream, and a lot of other good stuff while you sign up.

Then along comes S & B Construction from Erie to guarantee another $100 for fourth place. See? It just keeps getting better. I am still working on even more sponsorships, on top of those great ones.

Add on 100-percent payback of your entry fee – $50 bucks a boat – and this adds up to lots of money and lots of fun.

Throw in the fact that fishermen may use the Route 2 boat ramp, the Prophetstown boat ramp or the Erie boat ramp, and it gives a team plenty of options.

The weigh-in will be at Prophetstown State Park at 2 p.m., so make plans to be there. The tournament will run from 7 a.m. until the weigh-in.

The great thing about this format is that anyone can catch fish on cheese and dip baits. It is a great deal for father-son or husband-wife duos to team up and fish. So show up May 10, get involved, and have some great food, to boot.

Oh, and feel free to keep up the rain dancing. The effort is greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions about information for this tournament, or just need a pep talk to enter, feel free to contact me at catmatt@catfishacademy.com or message me on my Facebook page, Matt Catmatt Jones.

I know there are many people out there who have always wanted to fish a tournament or two. This is the one to jump into. All the local communities are involved, and it is a great time. So be there.

The forecast shows some snow, rain and warmer weather. All three sound good to me. Get outside this week and do ... something.
