DeKalb County courtrooms to get cameras

SYCAMORE – DeKalb County has been added to a pilot program allowing news cameras into courtrooms.

The Illinois Supreme Court officials announced Tuesday that they accepted the 19th Judicial Circuit, which is comprised of Lake County, and the 23rd Judicial Circuit into the program. The 23rd Judicial Circuit is DeKalb and Kendall counties.

Timothy McCann, chief judge in the 23rd judicial circuit, chaired the Courtroom Media Committee, which included prosecutors and public defenders from DeKalb and Kendall counties. That was before those two counties split from the 16th Judicial Circuit, which not just is comprised of Kane County.

“I chaired the committee and assisted the committee in developing suggested rules and procedures for the implementation of the program in our counties,” McCann said in the news release.

“We also received input from the public at hearings. I believe that committee experience will enable the 23rd Circuit to implement the pilot program efficiently and quickly.”

In the past year, 25 counties in nine judicial circuits statewide have participated in the program.
