DIXON – Judges have been selected for the Phidian Art Club’s 25th annual Literary Competition.
Sue Cording of Galena will judge the nonfiction entries. She taught English, American and British literature, grammar, composition, creative writing, and communications in public schools. She also has worked as an adjunct professor at community colleges.
The fiction judge is Rosalie Hewitt. She is a professor emerita from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. She taught American literature, rhetoric, and composition.
Donna Bauerly of Dubuque, Iowa, will judge poetry. She has taught the last 36 years as a professor of literature and writing at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa. After retiring, she has served as president of the Carnegie-Stout Public Library Foundation in Dubuque.
Entries must be mailed or dropped to the Phidian Art Club, c/o Dixon Public Library, 221 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon, IL 61021 by March 1.
The contest is open to those 17 or older, living within a 35-mile radius of Dixon.
Manuscript should have the title and page number only at the top of each page. The cover sheet should list the title, category, and author’s name, address, phone number, and email address.
Fiction and nonfiction entries must show the word count on the upper right corner of Page 1.
Submissions must be original and published and typed, double-spaced on one side of an 8.5- by 11-inch paper. Each person may submit one entry per category. The categories are poetry, any form, 30-line limit; fiction, 3,500-word limit; and nonfiction 3,000-word limit. The cost is $8 per entry. Checks should be made payable to Phidian Art Club.
Participants should submit a self-addressed, stamped envelope so the manuscripts can be returned to the author. Prizes will be awarded; winners will be notified in mid-April.
The Phidian Extraordinary Literary Event will be at 2 p.m. April 28 at the Dixon Public Library.
First- through third-place winners will read their entries.
