Chad Speelman, 24, who shimmied up this tree to help his cat, Pudge, had to be helped out of it by firefighters Thursday afternoon. Pudge had fallen out of their front- yard tree twice before, Speelman said, so he decided to rescue him.

STERLING – A man trying to rescue his cat from a tree Thursday ended up having to be saved himself.

Shortly after 3 p.m., Sterling firefighters were called to a house in the 300 block of Avenue F to help Chad Speelman, 24, get down from a tree.

Speelman said his black-and-white cat, Pudge, had climbed a front-yard tree it had fallen out of twice before. So he decided to rescue Pudge, who climbed higher than ever before.

“I pretty much got stuck,” Speelman said.

His fiancée, Nicole Cook, became worried, so they called the fire department. Firefighters put up a ladder, and Speelman climbed down by himself.

Sterling Fire Lt. Jason Williamson said the focus was on rescuing Speelman, not the cat.

“We thought we would get the cat while we there,” he said.

The department usually holds off on rescuing cats for a few days, because they usually can get down on their own, Williamson said.
