Shop Small Day will be Feb. 9

Shopping day planned to be a quarterly event

STERLING – Shopping small is going bigger.

Feb. 9’s Shop Small Saturday, organized by Sauk Valley Shop Small, will be the first of what is planned as a quarterly event. The next ones will be May 4 and Aug. 3, followed by the traditional November sale day.

The group held “Small Business Saturday” in 2011 and 2012 on the day after Black Friday as a relaxing alternative to the hustle and bustle of the busiest shopping day of the year.

The February “Shop Small Saturday” will be the first non-holiday-oriented event organized by the group.

“We’re trying to keep ‘shopping small, shopping local’ in the forefront of everybody’s mind year round,” said Janna Groharing, who is helping organize the event. “That’s the primary goal of making it a year-round campaign.”

The group hopes area shoppers will support their local, independent, small businesses on that day. The 30 participating merchants in Sterling, Dixon and Rock Falls will offer specials, and special deals for customers who wear a Sauk Valley Shop Small button, many of which were given out at November’s event.

In Small Business Saturday tradition, artists and musicians will perform in some of the shops, Groharing said.

Sauk Valley Shop Small, a grassroots effort of the Shop Small movement, unites locally owned, independent retailers and cultural groups from within the Sauk Valley.
