Ill. Tollway patrols help drivers stranded in cold

The Zero Weather Road Patrols search for and respond to calls from stranded motorists when temperatures drop below zero. In a statement Tuesday, Tollway officials said the patrols have helped more than 180 people since cold weather hit on Saturday.

Anyone who needs help may contact the patrols by dialing *999 or by calling Illinois Tollway dispatch.

Officials recommend motorists make sure their gas tank is at least half full and their cellphone fully charged before they hit the road.

Tires should be properly inflated, and drivers should have a winter emergency kit that includes gloves, boots, blankets, water, road flares and a flashlight with fresh batteries.
