STERLING – Police are looking for a man suspected of stealing thousands of dollars in baby formula from Walmart in Sterling and Dixon earlier this month.

Darel Young, 41, of Sterling, is wanted on a Whiteside County warrant for retail theft of more than $300.

He is black, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and 240 pounds. He is believed to be traveling between Sterling and the Chicago area in a blue 1999 Dodge Caravan with Illinois plates P216843.

Although police have said they don’t yet know why the formula was stolen, it can be used to cut drugs or, because of its expense, sold on the black market. Police are asking businesses to report any such suspicious activity immediately.

Anyone with information as to Young’s whereabouts is asked to call Sterling Police at 815-632-6640, Dixon Police at 815-288-4411 or Crime Stoppers at 815-625-7867.

It would be interesting, though, to discover how, in the world, a person steals thousands of dollars worth of baby food.
