Ross, Chicago State split weekend tilts

Dixon High School
alumnus Matt Ross helped Chicago State to a split of two games in Chicago over the weekend.

Ross scored 11 points and grabbing five rebounds in 32 minutes of an 81-56 victory over Houston Baptist on Saturday. He had eight points, five rebounds and two blocks in a 66-63 overtime setback to Loyola on Sunday.

Russell, Redbirds beat Salukis

Rock Falls High School grad Jamie Russell racked up 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals, helping Illinois State beat Southern Illinois on Saturday in Normal.

Russell shot 7-for-9 from the field, and the Redbirds (12-6) led the Salukis (4-12) 45-18 at the half.

Northwestern edged by No. 2 Indiana

Northwestern’s second-half comeback fell short in a 67-59 loss to No. 2 Indiana on Sunday in Evanston.

The Wildcats (11-8, 2-4) trailed 31-17 at the half.

Northwestern fell behind by 17 points in the first half and trailed 31-17 at the break. Reggie Hearn led the Wildcats with 22 points.

Hawks’ Carcillo out several weeks

Chicago Blackhawks winger Daniel Carcillo will miss about 4 weeks with a right knee injury suffered during the team’s season-opening game Saturday in Los Angeles.

Carcillo was playing in his first game since undergoing major surgery on his left knee last January and was injured in a third-period collision along the boards with the Kings’ Drew Doughty.

Oregon promotes
Helfich to head coach

Mark Helfrich, the offensive coordinator who helped orchestrate Chip Kelly’s high-powered offense, has been promoted to coach, according to multiple reports.

Helfrich, an Oregon native, began his coaching career with the Ducks in 1997 as a graduate assistant from Southern Oregon.

Shurmur to likely join Kelly in Philly

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to hire Pat Shurmur to serve as offensive coordinator for new head coach Chip Kelly.

Shurmur, 47, was fired after two seasons as Cleveland’s head coach.

Bulls lose to Grizzlies in OT on Saturday

Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Zach Randolph had 13 points and 19 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Bulls 85-82 in overtime Saturday night.
