STERLING – Robert “Sam” Gallentine, 68, of Sterling, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
Sam was born March 24, 1944, in Sterling, the son of Elmer and Margaret (Brecunier) Gallentine. He worked in the nail and die room at Northwestern Steel & Wire for 31 years.
Sam married Leta Luttrell on Sept. 22, 1967, in Rock Falls.
He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals, Indiana Hoosiers and Arizona Cardinals fan. Sam was a proud graduate of Rock Falls High School, class of 1962. During his high school years, he was on the track and basketball teams. He loved being a part of the Running Rockets, and nothing gave him more pleasure than running the hardwood with his friends. Sam and Leta always had a Doberman at their house and he treasured his current dogs, CJ and Trevor.
Survivors include his wife, Leta of Sterling; two daughters, Nannette (Tim) Pashon and Monica (David) Druen, both of Sterling; two sons, Gregg (Deena Thatcher) Gallentine of Rock Falls and Bryan (Angie Walters) Gallentine of Sterling; one sister, Sue (Jim) Naylon of Arizona; one brother, Paul (Judy) Gallentine of Rockford; nine precious grandchildren, Samantha, Tessa, Rachel, Connor, Molly, Ryley, Rubey, Garrett, and Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.
Sam is also survived by a great treasured group of friends. He enjoyed collecting friends with whom he could trade stories, talk sports, and who could handle some good-natured razzing! He always looked forward to coffee with Mary Lynne and sharing a cold one with Phyllis. Many may remember him driving his red pickup with CARDNLS on the license plate through town with his window down and red hat on.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A gathering will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at McDonald Funeral Home in Rock Falls. A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Peg Williams of Grace Episcopal Church officiating. There will be an informal gathering at 2 p.m. Saturday at W.D. Cardwell’s Tap in Rock Falls.
