Mary Elizabeth Garrison

MOUNT MORRIS – Mary Elizabeth Garrison, 95, of Mount Morris, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Pinecrest Manor in Mount Morris.

She was born May 15, 1917, at her parents’ farm in Pine Creek Township near Oregon, the daughter of Samuel Jacob and Anna Rebecca (Miller) Hanes.

She attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College and National College of Education in Chicago, earning her Bachelor of Education degree in 1964. She taught in several rural one-room schools then in Polo elementary schools for a total of 27 years.

She was married to Howard Garrison on Dec. 10, 1944, and they farmed near Polo for 47 years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years.

Survivors include her son, Ed (Mary Lou) Garrison of Mount Morris; one grandson, one granddaughter and three great-grandsons.

Mary Elizabeth was a lifetime member of the Church of the Brethren, Mount Morris.

A celebration of her life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Morris Church of the Brethren, 409 W. Brayton Road, with visitation at the church beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Mount Morris.

Memorials have been established to Mount Morris Church of the Brethren and the Good Samaritan Fund at Pinecrest Community.
