Boys basketball: Johnston reaches milestone in win

Erie senior passes 1,000-point mark; Comets fall at home

Jacob Johnston scored his 1,000th career point Friday, leading the Erie Cardinals to a 46-30 victory over the Amboy Clippers in a Three Rivers game at Amboy.

Johnston hit a pair of 3-pointers and had a game-high 19 points for Erie (13-8, 5-3). Jordan Chandler and Rhett Stover added 10 points apiece for the Cardinals, who led 26-14 by halftime.

Tyson Powers paced Amboy (6-13, 2-7) with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

St. Bede 63, Newman 36: The Comets were outscored 42-22 in the second half of a nonconference loss at home.

Kyle Moore had 11 points and five rebounds for Newman (14-4), while Noah McCarty added seven points and three boards. Joe Pyszka led the Bruins with 14 points and 18 rebounds.

Prophetstown 53, Morrison 42: The Prophets led 10-4 after one quarter and never looked back in a Three Rivers road win, snapping a seven-game losing streak.

Carter Ames scored 17 points and Zach Inskeep had 15 for Prophetstown (10-10, 4-4), which improved to .500 both overall and in conference play.

Will Greul scored 13 points for the Mustangs (3-19, 0-8), hitting both of Morrison’s 3-pointers.

Bureau Valley 57, Fulton 49: The Storm pulled away from a tight Three Rivers game with a 20-12 scoring edge in the fourth quarter in Manlius.

Tommy Johnston scored 20 points and Parker Neuhalfen added 16 for BV (17-9, 6-5). John Widener had 12 points, Nick Fish scored 11 and Matt Dail chipped in 10 for the balanced Steamers (4-18, 1-7).

Galena 47, West Carroll 40: The Thunder trailed throughout, but Galena’s 17-5 scoring edge in the fourth quarter was too much to overcome in an NUIC West loss in Mount Carroll.

Tommy Losch had 20 points and eight rebounds for West Carroll (7-14, 2-4), while Trevor Jones added 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Nick Hughes nabbed four steals and dished three assists.

Michael Schultz scored 20 points for Galena (4-9, 2-4).
