Programs planned at Whiteside senior facility

STERLING – Winter activities continue at the Whiteside County Senior Center, 1207 W. Ninth St.

■ A free grief group sponsored by Hospice of the Rock River Valley will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays from Jan. 30 through March 6. The program is designed for anyone who has experienced a loss and is searching for new meaning.

■ A Creative Corner program will be at 9 a.m. Feb. 6. Participants will make greeting cards for Valentine’s Day and other occasions. Those attending can bring dried flowers. The cost is $1. Cards and envelopes will be furnished.

■ “Life Goes On,” a free presentation about organ donation and transplantation, will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 7. Jan Eschen, regional coordinator of the Illinois organ, tissue donor program, will speak on the subject.

She will discuss the state registry, who can be a donor, how donation happens, and who determines who receives donated organs.

■ Connie Von Holten, a registered nurse at CGH Medical Center in Sterling, will present “Eating for a Healthy Heart” at 11 a.m. Feb. 8. The program is free. Those attending will test their knowledge about heart health, and play cardiac bingo.

■ A program about Alzhiemer’s disease will be at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 8. Information about detection, causes and risk factors, stages of the disease, and treatment will be provided. Call 800-272-3900 to register.

■ A Mardi Gras party is planned for 11 a.m. Feb. 12. Those attending are welcome to dress up. They will play games and have a chance to win prizes. Free beads will be handed out. Registration is not required.

■ Free train trip shows will be at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 12 and 13. Each program will feature three different trips. Snacks will be served. Registration is not required.

■ Valentine’s Day activities will start at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 14, with a square dancing demonstration by the Morrison Grand Squares. Those attending can watch, or join in and dance. Music will be by Mary Ley, who plays harp and guitar.

Lunch will be $5. Meatloaf, mashed potatoes with gravy, vegetable, dessert, drink, and a special Valentine cookie will be served.
