ROCK FALLS – Ron McCord won't be sent back to the principal's office this summer.
The Rock Falls High School board Wednesday night named McCord the new superintendent of the school.
"It is an honor to have been given the opportunity to serve as superintendent of Rock Falls High School," McCord said in a news release prepared before the meeting. "This is a great school with an outstanding staff, who are dedicated to the success of our students."
McCord has been at the high school for almost 20 years. He was a biology teacher from 1994 until 2004 and the assistant principal from 2004 to 2006, and he has been the principal since 2006. He also was a football coach from 1997 to 2004.
McCord will take the place of Superintendent Jane Eichman, who is retiring at the end of the school year. His first day is July 1.
The board approved a 3-year contract with a base salary of $120,000 – "a competitive contract commensurate with the duties and responsibilities of superintendent and the expectations of [the board]," the release said.
Eichman announced her retirement in September. Her last day is June 28.
Eichman has been a superintendent 10 years: 7 at Rock Falls High School and 3 at East Coloma School. She has been in education 40 years.
The district advertised the position in October and accepted applications through early December. It received assistance from a search service through the Illinois Association of School Boards.
The board interviewed six candidates in three special, closed-session meetings Jan. 5-7. The board then met Thursday in closed session to discuss the candidates and choose a finalist.
The board went into closed session for almost an hour and a half Wednesday night, some of the time with McCord, presumably to discuss the superintendent position.
